On June 23, 1950, a Douglas DC-4 aircraft owned and operated by now defunct Northwest Orient Airlines, disappeared with 55 passengers and 3 crew members. The aircraft was presumed to be roughly 3,500 feet above Lake Michigan and about 18 miles from Benton Harbour when it lost contact with Controllers, just after the Pilot requested to drop altitude to 2,500 feet. Despite an intensive surface and underwater search, the aircraft was not found apart from a few fragments.
This crash was the worst commercial air disaster in the United States at that time.
