In 1959, Nigeria began negotiations with ICAO for an aviation training center to train more indigenous Pilots and Engineers. With time, this resulted in the establishment of the NIGERIAN CIVIL AVIATION TRAINING CENTRE (NCATC) in Zaria – Kaduna State, in 1964.
The Center was established as a joint programme between the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). For a period of ten years, the UNDP and ICAO maintained a joint assistance programme for the Centre which ended on December 31, 1974, leaving the total funding to the Nigerian Government.
Finally in 1986, the center was renamed the NIGERIAN COLLEGE OF AVIATION TECHNOLOGY (NCAT).
