On 27 April,1932, Imperial Airways commenced a regular passenger service to Cape Town. Imperial Airways was an early British commercial long-range airline, operating from 1924 to 1939, and principally serving the British Empire routes to South Africa and other regions. Passengers were typically businessmen or colonial administrators. They later extended their services to Cape Town for the carriage of Christmas mail, and a mail-only route (London – Cape Town) was subsequently opened. On 27 April 1932, this route was finally opened to passengers.
