On 23 August 1958, NIGERIA AIRWAYS was founded and was initially named West African Airways Corporation oLimited (WAAC NIGERIA). When Ghana gained independence in 1957, they pulled out of WAAC, and the Nigerian government in partnership with the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) and the Elder Demper Lines formed the West African Airways Corporation (Nigeria) Limited, with the percentage share: 51%, 32⅔%, and 16⅓ respectively. They also took over the WAAC assets and liabilities, and started operations on October 1, 1958 with a BOAC Boeing 377 Stratocruiser.
