On June 27, 1923, the first successful aerial refueling was done with US Army Air Service aircraft. The U.S. Army undertook an aerial refueling test at Rockwell Field in its quest to extend the airborne time of the aircraft being refueled for a prolonged air mission.
In its demonstration, one DH-4B biplan equipped with a 50-foot length of hose carrying Pilots VIRGIL HINE and FRANK SEIFERT successfully passed fuel to another DH-4B aircraft flown by LOWELL H. SMITH and JOHN P. RICHTER.
