Elmer Ambrose Sperry, an American inventor and entrapreneur, founded a gyroscope company and began work on a gyrocompass to replace the magnetic compass. In 1913, working with his son Lawrence Burst Sperry, Sperry created a gyro that could control the elevators and ailerons of an aircraft. This invention was the first known gyroscope-guided autopilot steering system.
