On Wednesday 23rd September 2009, Akwa Ibom International Airport – AKIA (now Victor Attah International Airport – VAIA), Uyo – Nigeria was officially commissioned and Arik’s Boeing 737-800 with registration number 5N-MJO, became the first commercial aircraft to land at the airport.
It was unprecedented in the annals of the State’s history as the crowd of ecstatic people, numbering close to a million trooped to the airport community to witness the inaugural landing. The former Governor Obong Victor Attah, who started the airport project was on board the aircraft, while the then Governor Obong Godswill Akpabio and other dignitaries were on ground at the Interim Domestic Terminal to receive the first aircraft.
